After versatile careers in various endeavors, John Brock is semi-retired and writes from his home by the sea near Pawleys Island/Georgetown, South Carolina.

His columns appear weekly in South Carolina’s oldest newspaper and in several other newspapers in the Charleston, SC area. The columns depict one person’s observations of growing up and living Southern - along with occasional topics of national interest.

After college, Brock served in the US Army during the Korean War era. Upon discharge, he was a newspaper reporter and eventually served as a newspaper editor and publisher of several newspapers in the Charlotte, NC region. He was purported to be, at age 24, the youngest commercial newspaper editor in America.

But journalism was not enough to capture his total energies and he eventually became founder and CEO of various endeavors. He headed one of the Carolinas largest mechanical contracting firms while dabbling in real estate development and antique lighting fixture manufacture. He, at one point, embarked on a motion picture venture during which he produced a number of feature-length movies as well as numerous documentary-type productions. He has made frequent television appearances and was once the spokesman for the Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge on the ABC network.

At almost age fifty, he reentered academia via graduate school and eventually became a college professor and vice president of two private colleges. In retirement, he continues to serve as consultant to several colleges and universities. He makes frequent appearances as a public speaker.

But mostly, he reflects and writes about his true love – the Southland and its colorful inhabitants. His columns are reprinted in publications across the land.

Brock has been married to Barbara, an artist, for fifty years and they have three sons and two grandsons. The original paintings on this website are by Barbara and most of the photography is by their sons.
